FOOD SECURITY AND LIVELIHOODS
WORK WITH COMMUNITIES TO IMPROVE FOOD SECURITY
Action Against Hunger takes a tailored approach to addressing the needs of communities and harnessing their unique resources, boosting agricultural production, launching local markets and supporting small businesses. These efforts improve sustainable sources of food and income, while strengthening local food systems.
WE SUPPORT WOMEN TO FIGHT HUNGER
Our hunger prevention programmes focus on women first. Why? In almost two thirds of the world's countries, women are more likely to be food insecure than men. At the same time, women are our most powerful allies in the fight against hunger. Women who participate in household decisions produce and earn more; women also reinvest up to 90% of their income back into their families, helping to improve health, nutrition and more.
What are we doing on food security and livelihoods?
Emergency aid
When disasters destroy infrastructure and food supplies, when violence forces thousands to flee or when drought disrupts food production, Action Against Hunger responds with food, cash and other basic supplies to prevent short-term hunger and help communities build resilience to future emergencies.
Financial planning for women
Through our savings and loan groups, women pool their resources and can borrow to invest in a new business or to cope with an emergency.
Climate-friendly farming methods
Action Against Hunger uses an environmentally friendly approach to help people make the most of their local natural resources, including land, water, soil and seeds, and grow nutritious food, diversify their crops and create local markets.
Farmers' cooperatives
To foster collaboration and learning, we create and support farmers' cooperatives. Some of these groups come together to collectively rent land to farm, while others share lessons learned with each other.
Job training and small business support
From small grants for families recovering from conflict, to seeds and tools for investing in family farms, to livestock and veterinary services and assistance to small businesses, we help families regain self-sufficiency.
HOW DO WE HELP?
Our work with a community in northern Central America
The challenge was to meet the humanitarian needs of vulnerable populations affected by violence, forced displacement and food insecurity.
