The Board of Trustees is our governing body. Every year we are accountable to it for our work. None of the members receive remuneration, which guarantees their independence. The Board of Trustees monitors the effectiveness of our performance and validates our budgets annually. It also ensures that accountability mechanisms are properly enforced: not only those required by law, but also those that we owe to all of you who place your trust in us.
JOSÉ LUIS LEAL

JOSÉ LUIS LEAL
a prominent economist, Secretary of State in 1978 and Minister of Economy from April 1979 to September 1980 and former President of the Spanish Banking Association, he has played influential roles in politics and finance.
Academic Background and International Experience
Born in Granada in 1939, José Luis Leal holds degrees in Law and Political Science from the Complutense University of Madrid and the University of Geneva, respectively. He also holds a diploma in Statistics and a PhD in Economics from the University of Paris. His international experience includes five years as a professor at the University of Nanterre and five years working at the Organisation for Economic Co-operation and Development (OECD).
Political Career and Banking Experience
During 1977 and 1980, José Luis Leal held various political posts in the economic area of the government. Subsequently, he was economic advisor to Banco de Vizcaya and assistant to the chairman of Banco Bilbao Vizcaya. In addition, he chaired the Spanish Banking Association from 1990 to 2006 and was president of the European Union Banking Federation until 1998.
Humanitarian and Social Commitment
José Luis Leal demonstrates a firm commitment to humanitarian and social causes. He was president of the Spanish "Dialogue” Friendship Association of Action Against Hunger, and vice-president of the Fernando Abril Martorell Foundation. He also holds the honorary presidency of Saint-Gobain Cristalería, is a member of the Royal Board of Trustees of the Prado Museum, a trustee of the Duques de Soria Foundation and a member of the Royal Order of Carlos III, as well as a Commander of the French Legion of Honour.

In 2005, José Luis Leal visited the South Caucasus region and was able to see the humanitarian work being carried out at first hand: "We are doing very interesting work: we are trying to bring families together to help them organise cooperatives or set up some kind of production that can guarantee the stability of their income and secure their future."

Sofia Rodríguez-Sahagún has since October 2020 been Global Head of Marketing, Digital Sales, Design and Behavioural Economics at BBVA. She joined the Bank in October 2015, first as Director of Marketing and Digital Sales in Spain, and subsequently as Director of Digital Banking, actively contributing to the transformation of the Bank, the value of the brand, the growth of the digital business and the consolidation of BBVA's mobile app as Best Global Banking App (Forrester). She led the launch in Spain of ‘BBVA Aprendemos Juntos’, and has subsequently contributed to the globalisation of this content initiative to promote education, and help people develop as individuals and build a more inclusive and planet-friendly future.
Degree in Law and Business Administration from ICADE. Throughout her career she has developed new and/or transformative projects, with an impact on brand building, customer experience and digital business growth. She immediately turned her attention to the financial world as director of the Corporate division of Renta 4, although her career includes companies in other sectors such as the consultancy firm McKinsey&Co, Ikea Ibérica, where she was director of Strategy and Marketing, and Vodafone Spain, where she was director of Brand and Customer for more than seven years. Throughout her career, she has also specialised in digital banking, holding relevant responsibility in this area in different companies such as Open Bank and ING Direct.
