Verishen Settlement inauguration of social housing for refugees from Nagorno-Karabakh

News

On Friday, January 31st, 2025, Action Against Hunger South Caucasus’s Head of Base Armenia, Grigori Hovhannisyan and Technical Coordinator Richard Maxfield attended the inauguration of social housing for elderly refugees living in Verishen – which is part of the Goris municipalyt, Armenia’s Syunik region.

In a joint effort, Գորիսի համայնքապետարան / Goris Municipality, UNHCR Armenia and its partner Action Against Hunger South Caucasus renovated the building, with Acted Armenia providing the furbishing of the total of 8 rooms & the common spaces, which includes the common kitchen. Thanks to the close collaboration and the partnership between the host community, international organisations and NGOs, this project could be realised. This way, Verishen social house can soon welcome 10 refugees in need of shelter and companionship. 🏠

The building was previously donated by The Paros Foundation and renovated under the Providing multi-sector assistance to support the immediate and longer-term needs of refugees from Nagorno Karabakh” project, funded by the European Union-EU Civil Protection & Humanitarian Aid. This project aims at building capacity and support community efforts to ensure dignified living conditions for elderly refugees, serving as a best-practice example of social housing & benefitting vulnerable refugees in need of shelter.
