SYRIA: MOBILE SOLUTIONS FOR COMPREHENSIVE HEALTHCARE
In areas where access to healthcare is limited or nonexistent, Action Against Hunger steps in to deliver essential services right to the community's doorstep.
In partnership with the Health Directorate, which deploys medical teams to rural regions, Action Against Hunger operates Syria's only dental mobile clinic. This clinic, housed in a specially equipped vehicle, travels throughout Aleppo governorate to provide much-needed dental care. Beyond the mobile unit, temporary clinics are set up to provide internal medicine and gynecology services in local dispensaries. When such facilities aren't available, the team adapts and uses community members' homes to provide care.
The clinic is staffed by an internist, nurses, a gynecologist, a midwife, and two dentists, all supported by assistant doctors. Equipped with a portable ultrasound machine and essential diagnostic tools like blood glucose meters, blood pressure monitors, and hemoglobin meters, the clinic is capable of diagnosing and treating a wide range of conditions.
For people like Abduljawad, a 49-year-old father of six who returned to his village after three years of displacement, the mobile clinic has been a great help. "They are offering an incredible service," he says. Recently, Abduljawad received dental care for tooth decay and had his wisdom tooth extracted. He was also treated for a neck spasm by the internal medicine doctor. "I am extremely grateful for these services; without the mobile clinic I wouldn't have been able to get dental care as it’s usually too expensive," he shares.
There is a dispensary in Abduljawad’s village, it’s the only healthcare facility in the area, but it lacks many services. Residents would have to travel half an hour to the city for other treatments - a journey made difficult by the lack of transportation and high fuel prices. Now, with the mobile clinic providing free healthcare and medications that weren’t available before, the community finally has access to these vital services.
Through this mobile approach, Action Against Hunger ensures that even isolated villages receive the medical attention they deserve, bridging the gap created by years of crisis.
