Overcoming Polio in Lebanon: Walid's Path to Purpose
Walid, a Lebanese man born in 1964, faced a significant challenge early in life when he started suffering from polio at the age of five. The illness left him with paralysis in his left hand and leg. For seven long years, he was unemployed, relying on the unstable assistance of relatives.
Finding a job was difficult for Walid due to his health condition. When he sought employment, society often responded with pity rather than opportunities, impacting his self-esteem. "My condition doesn't prevent me from working if given the chance," he emphasized.
Hope returned to Walid when he saw workers in his village, Saksakiyeh, participating in projects. Though initially doubtful after many job rejections, Walid was inspired when he saw someone with a similar injury working on a project. With the help of the municipality, he applied for the cash-for-work program implemented by Action Against Hunger and funded by KfW (Germany). The respect and support he received filled him with hope, confidence, and a sense of purpose. "Receiving help and becoming productive was a dream come true, providing significant moral and financial motivation," he shared.

On his first day on the job, Walid was sad and embarrassed, feeling physically inadequate compared to others. However, by the second day, the ACF Field Officer assigned him responsibilities like monitoring attendance and overseeing work in the public garden. This trust boosted his confidence and happiness. The cooperation with colleagues, new friendships, and respect from NGO officers renewed his self-esteem.
The financial support from the program allowed Walid to pay off debts and even buy a $20 bicycle for his son, fulfilling a small but meaningful request. Socially, the project brought a remarkable change; leaving the house daily to work strengthened his almost nonexistent social relationships. He formed new friendships, including with Syrian participants, developing social cohesion and mutual respect.
Reflecting on his time in the program, Walid describes it as a beautiful experience filled with learning and hope. The friendships, especially with his colleague Hilal, who continued to visit him even after the project ended, were particularly impactful.
The project’s environmental focus taught Walid the importance of individual contributions to preserving the environment. He also benefited from lectures on environmental issues, nutrition, and first aid, which enhanced his personal and professional growth.
Looking ahead, Walid hopes to return to work on similar projects, where respect and productivity are valued. "I have never felt as effective and purposeful as I did during this project," he said, looking forward to future opportunities.
To others facing similar challenges, Walid offers a message of encouragement: "Believe in your abilities and participate in similar projects to enhance your financial and moral capacities. It will make you stronger in facing difficult economic and living conditions."
Walid's journey with Action Against Hunger, funded by KfW Germany, highlights the deep impact of cash-for-work programs on individuals facing significant challenges. Through respect, support, and the opportunity to be productive, his story is proof of the positive enabling power of humanitarian efforts.
