Karim’s Story: Reclaiming Purpose and Dignity Through Work in Lebanon

News
2MIN

Karim is a 36-year-old man from southern Lebanon living with Down’s syndrome. He lives with his elderly mother, who relies on him for daily support and companionship.

Before the recent escalation of conflict, Karim’s life was stable. However, the loss of his father, the family’s main breadwinner, had a severe impact on their economic and social situation. With no employment opportunities and limited engagement outside the home, Karim became increasingly withdrawn. He slept for long hours and gradually lost his sense of purpose.

Through friends and the local municipality, Karim learned about Action Against Hunger’s Cash-for-Work program, supported by the German Government through KfW Development Bank, and found the courage to get involved.

With continuous encouragement and support from his family, community members, and the project team, Karim actively engaged in his assigned work. His transformation was visible. He demonstrated commitment through punctual attendance, a neat appearance, and a positive attitude toward his tasks. His constant smile reflected how meaningful the opportunity was for him.

Community members observed a clear change in Karim’s behavior. He became more motivated, confident, and socially engaged. Through his work, he built new friendships and earned an income that allows him to meet his personal needs while contributing to his mother’s support. For the first time, he felt productive, included, and valued within his community.

Karim expressed deep gratitude for the opportunity, particularly at a time when people living with disabilities often face exclusion and limited access to employment. For him, the programme offered more than financial support; it restored structure, dignity, and meaning to his daily life.

His sister shared: “Karim is extremely happy with his work. He wakes up early and is always the first to arrive at the municipality. He does not want the 40 days of the programme to end, as this is the first time he has worked and felt productive and valued by the people around him.”

With a renewed sense of focus, security and well-being, Karim now takes joy in the present and is more hopeful for the future. “I am extremely happy with how I spend my days,” he says, with a smile.
