Husband Schools: An example to follow!
In an ever-changing world, men's commitment to women's and children's health has become crucial. In the Kayes Health District, this commitment is clearly manifested in initiatives such as the discussion groups organized by the Husband Schools (EDM, for its acronym in French) of Ségala and Ambedi Poste (Mali). The aim of these meetings is to raise men's awareness of their essential role in promoting health, especially that of women and children in their communities.
Awareness of women's and children's health is an essential element in improving the well-being of communities. Reproductive health and access to adequate health care are fundamental pillars of this issue. It is essential to involve men in this process to ensure an inclusive, respectful and constructive dialogue between women, adolescents and male partners.
When men become aware of the importance of reproductive health, nutrition and health care, they can positively influence the behavior and decisions of those around them. Discussion forums, led by role model husbands, provide a platform where participants can exchange ideas, ask questions and share experiences. This participatory process is essential to break down stereotypes and foster a culture of harmony and respect. Bakaye Sangaré, a model husband, says: “The Husband School has been very beneficial to our community. Before, children had health problems and often suffered from malnutrition. Women were not attending prenatal and postnatal checkups. But now, after awareness sessions with model husbands, the children's health is getting better and better, and pregnant and lactating women are regularly attending prenatal and postnatal checkups. Heads of households are also getting involved in family decision making, to make it easier for women and children to attend health centers.”
The involvement of men, who have almost all the power to influence and make decisions, is essential for behavioral change. Husband Schools play a crucial role in changing behavior within communities. These learning spaces are designed to sensitize men to various health-related issues, including family planning and the importance of prenatal care. By becoming “model husbands,” these men commit to supporting their partners through all stages of motherhood. This approach not only strengthens family ties, but also contributes to a lasting change in the perception of men's role in society.
Men's commitment to the health of women and children is essential to building resilient and prosperous societies.
The Husband Schools' approach, supported by Global Affairs Canada, demonstrates that change is possible when awareness is raised by fostering an open and inclusive dialogue for the well-being of women and children.
