Hanan’s story in Lebanon: a chance that changed everything
Hanan, a 36-year-old Syrian woman, has been living in Lebanon since the outbreak of the Syrian conflict in 2011. Over more than a decade she worked hard to build a life for herself in Lebanon, where she currently resides with her elderly uncle.
For years Hanan relied on irregular work cleaning houses and shops. Her employment and income were unstable, forcing her to make difficult choices to cope with limited resources. “I deliberately avoided purchasing anything beyond the essentials,” she says. “My focus was solely on securing the necessities required for survival. It was the only way I could cope with the financial hardship I was facing.”
Hanan learned through a previous employer about an opportunity to join the Action Against Hunger Cash-for-Work (CfW) program, funded by the German Government through KfW Development Bank. She applied with cautious hope, driven by the urgent need to address her financial challenges. “I never imagined I would be selected,” she recalls. “I applied hoping for a chance, and it was a complete surprise when I was informed that I had been chosen.”
At the start of the programme, Hanan found the new environment challenging, as she was unfamiliar with the area and did not know anyone. However, with time, she adapted, built meaningful friendships, and found a sense of belonging. Over the course of her assignment, she contributed to multiple activities alongside other participants in Fanar, Mount Lebanon, including road clearance and cleaning municipal buildings.

Her dedication did not go unnoticed. Following the completion of the CfW cycle, the Fanar municipality offered Hanan a long-term position in recognition of her performance – marking a turning point in her livelihood.
With the income Hanan earned through the CFW program, she was finally able to afford essentials like medicine for her uncle, food, water, phone bills, and public transport, sparing her long daily walks. Her previous jobs were unstable, and she saved every penny she could. Now, with a permanent job secured, she can travel comfortably and meet her needs without worry.
In the past, Hanan often had to prioritize medicine and food over hygiene items, and often resorted to coping strategies such as skipping meals or reducing portions. Today, she can now meet her household’s essential needs consistently and with dignity. “The things I used to wish I could buy I can now get, like meat, clothing, hygiene items, medicine and much more,” she says.
Beyond the financial benefits, Hanan has built new friendships and felt supported through her journey. Reflecting on her experience, she shares, “It was a wonderful opportunity. The treatment was excellent; you listened to my concerns and visited us daily.”
Looking ahead, Hanan’s dream is to have a place of her own, achieve full independence, and build a family rooted in mutual care and support. Her message to others facing challenges is simple but powerful: “Stay strong and never give up. Keep going – eventually, you’ll make it.”
