Germany and Ministry of Agriculture kick off new 12 million Euro-project on climate-smart agriculture
Beirut, 25 September 2026 – Germany and the Ministry of Agriculture today launched a new project to promote climate-smart agriculture, create employment and boost agricultural skills. The 12 million Euro-project “Promotion of agricultural value chains.” is financed via KfW Development Bank by the Federal Ministry for Economic Cooperation and Development of Germany. It will be implemented in Bekaa, Baalbek-Hermel, South Lebanon and Nabatiyeh to strengthen agricultural production and livelihoods in communities affected by economic hardship, conflict and climate-related pressures.
“Projects of this kind contribute to the Ministry of Agriculture’s strategy. By working together, we can continue to strengthen Lebanon’s agricultural sector,” said Nizar Hani, Minister of Agriculture.
“Germany has supported agriculture throughout the recent crises in Lebanon, as the sector is key to food security, employment and economic recovery”, said Uta Simon, Head of Development Cooperation at the German embassy in Beirut. “This project will create close to 6,000 temporary jobs and benefit some 4,000 farmers by rehabilitating agricultural land and infrastructure, in addition to expanding farmers’ knowledge and skills.”
More than 1,200 farmers will receive training and participate in hands-on learning opportunities. Eight demonstration plots will provide spaces for farmers to test and exchange knowledge on agroecological and climate-smart practices, with a focus on sustainable soil and water management. To strengthen women’s economic participation, four women-led initiatives will receive support to improve agro-food processing facilities and collective working spaces, helping expand their role in agricultural value chains and sustainable income generation.
“Investing in Lebanon’s agriculture means investing in people, livelihoods and the future of rural communities,” said Susan Tackenberg, Regional Director for Lebanon and Syria at Action Against Hunger. “Through the Agro-Jobs project, we are bringing together employment opportunities, agricultural infrastructure, knowledge and climate-smart practices to help vulnerable communities strengthen their livelihoods today and build greater resilience for the future.”
The project builds on the longstanding cooperation between Germany and Action Against Hunger in Lebanon, while contributing to the priorities of the Ministry of Agriculture to strengthen Lebanon’s agricultural sector.
