Haiti

Humanitarian context

Since March 2023, Haiti has witnessed a marked increase in violence and organised crime, especially in the Port-au-Prince region, where criminal gangs commit murders, kidnappings and sexual assaults. The humanitarian situation in Haiti is deteriorating, with aid organisations struggling to meet the growing needs.

Half of Haiti's population is in need of humanitarian assistance, with 45% living in areas facing severe food crises, a situation exacerbated by economic paralysis due to violence. A quarter of children are chronically malnourished. The Action Against Hunger programme focuses on the most vulnerable and hard-to-reach populations and aims to help families and communities cope with successive crises, including gang violence, natural disasters and climate change.

Our activity

Our team addressed malnutrition and its root causes through food distribution to disadvantaged families, screening and treatment for malnourished children, psychological support for traumatised people and survivors of sexual violence, and income-generating activities.

We also worked with local authorities to strengthen health systems and build resilience at the community level. In response to the cholera outbreaks, our rapid response teams installed water, sanitation and hygiene infrastructure and improved community-level reporting systems.

WHERE WE HELP

We help 24.5 million people each year. We work in 55 countries in Africa, Asia, Latin America and Europe, those most threatened by hunger.
