HUMANITARIAN CONTEXT
In Italy, 10% of people live in poverty and 25% are at risk of poverty. Families, especially single parents, were exposed to increasing social and economic vulnerability. Poverty also affects employees and pensioners, because of reduced purchasing power due to inflation, especially in essentials such as food. In addition, there are new forms of poverty, including food poverty. In Italy, 2.6 million people are forced to ask for help to feed themselves, a number that is expected to increase.
OUR ACTIVITY
In 2023, Action Against Hunger Italy implemented a project with 150 families in Milan and Naples (500-550 people in total) to reduce food insecurity and help participants find employment, thus improving their long-term independence. The four-month programme contributed to weekly food purchases for immediate nutritional support, limited to the duration of the programme. It provided nutritional training to encourage a change in shopping habits and the adoption of a healthy, balanced diet; and offered job placement training.
The results in 2023 were very encouraging: nutrition improved; 60% of participants reported drinking more water; 54% reduced their daily sugar intake; and 40% found jobs or went back to school. By 2024, the project will cover 200 families in Milan and Naples.
