New programme to support WASH rehabilitation in schools in Abkhazia to be initiated.
On the 3rd May, Action Against Hunger, South Caucasus Mission, signed a contract with UNICEF, for a new phase of the Water, Sanitation and Hygiene (WASH) support to schools in Abkhazia. In 2022, it is planned that 15 more schools will have their WASH facilities rehabilitated or constructed to the benefit of a minimum of 3,300 pupils and 65 teachers

Akhmeta Local Action Group expands support across the community
The Akhmeta Local Action Group, under the ENPARD funded project “Promoting inclusive and participatory local development in Akhmeta Municipality”, continues to support development initiatives across the local community. This will include the opening of three new open gyms, in Akhmeta town, Zemo Alvani and Kistauri.

Also supported by the LAG are Computer & Robotics courses, run by Akhmeta Innovation Centre as part of the project "Development of Innovation and Technology Skills for Rural Youth in Akhmeta Municipality”. During the trainings participants are getting acquainted with the basic principles of social media; making the most of the capabilities of the platforms; content strategy writing; generating effective content; speaking the correct ‘communication language’; and the process of generating and implementing ideas.

The interest is great among young people, and thus far 134 youth and teenager from Akhmeta have attended the courses.
On the 7th May, the Akhmeta LAG, in collaboration with the European Union, KRDF, Action Against Hunger and CENN will host the youth festival, ‘EU Day’, which will include a concert, child entertainment spaces, youth activities, the exhibition and sale of local products, as well as a presentation of the projects funded by the LAG.
GIZ EPIC training of state vocational college representatives
On the 2nd May, Action Against Hunger, and Deutsche Gesellschaft für Internationale Zusammenarbeit GmbH (GIZ) hosted an online workshop for representatives of state vocational colleges in Georgia, on the agency’s inclusive Shuttle approach and the “Soft Skills Development for Employment” approach, recently approved by the National Center for Educational Quality Enhancement (EQE) . This is part of the project “Economic and social participation of vulnerable displaced and local population in the South Caucasus (EPIC)” implemented by GIZ, in partnership with Action Against Hunger, on behalf of the German Federal Ministry for Economic Cooperation and Development (BMZ).

UNHCR Livelihoods project starts vocational workshops for young people in Abkhazia
As part of its livelihoods support project, funded by the UNHCR, Action Against Hunger is supporting 8 trainees to undergo a practical course on joinery, welding, and furniture production in two workshops in south-eastern Abkhazia. These workshops will build their capacities and prepare them for a future job or business venture. The products that are made during this course will be donated to the local community, to prepare for the upcoming winter. Over the next four months, the trainers and trainees will work together to produce tables, chairs, beds, windows, and doors for 14 families in need.
