A double earthquake has struck Venezuela
Terrible news is coming in from Venezuela: two powerful earthquakes, measuring 7.2 and 7.5 on the Richter scale, have struck the country, hitting the north and also affecting Caracas, the capital. The quakes were strongly felt across much of the country, triggering mass evacuations, structural damage and a climate of uncertainty amongst thousands of families. Worse still, there are already hundreds of deaths and thousands of injured and missing.
People have taken to the streets for fear of further aftershocks. Many have had their homes damaged, whilst assessments are continuing to determine the full extent of the emergency.
We’re starting to respond
Our teams on the ground are safe and sound, and are coordinating with local authorities to distribute drinking water, hygiene kits and water purification solutions. We’re also delivering tailored kits for those most in need, such as women and the elderly.
In addition, we have a team of specialist psychologists on hand to provide emotional support to those affected.
The speed of the response will be crucial in reducing the impact of the crisis.
